Quant 2nd Edition – PS Questions 121-130

Question 121 – “What is the value…”

OG Explanation is fine.   Factoring is not necessary but if you like to factor, 2x2-2.4x-1.7 = (2x+1)(x-1.7)

When x=0.7,   (1.4+1)(.7-1.7) = 2.4(-1) = -2.40

Question 122 – “If s, u, v….”

OG Explanation is fine.

Question 123 – “In the rectangular…”

OG Explanation is okay.   You could just graph the points.   Note: When you multiply or divide an inequality by a negative number, you MUST change the sign.

Question 124 – “The cost to rent…”

OG Explanation is okay.   You could pick numbers.   If x=$160.   Then with 16 people the cost is $10 and with 10 people the cost is $16.    Therefore, per person it costs $6 more.

a) 16/6 does not equal 6

b) 160/10 does not equal 6

c) 160/16 does not equal 6

d) 480/40 does not equal 6

e) 480/80 does equal 6

The answer is E

Question 125 – “If x is an integer…”

OG Explanation is fine.   You could also pick numbers and try process of elimination.

Question 126 – “A certain electronic component…”

OG Explanation is fine.

Question 127 – “As a salesperson…”

OG Explanation is fine.

Question 128 – “ If (x+y)/….”

OG Explanation is fine.

Question 129 – “Last year….”

OG Explanation is fine.   Alternatively, let sales of January through November = $1 per month and let December be $4       Total Sales = 11($1) + $4 = $15   Decembers share is 4/15.   The answer is B.

Question 130 – “Working alone….”

OG Explanation is okay.   You could pick numbers.  The least common multiple of 15 and 18 is 90 so it is a good number to use for the combined rate of printers Y and Z.    Y gets 6 jobs in 90 hours and Z gets 5 jobs done in 90 hours.   Combined, they get 11 jobs done in 90 hours.   Machine X can get these 11 jobs done in 11(12) =132 hours.  (Note:  since we are finding a ratio, the ratio of the time it takes X to complete 1 job to Y and Z completing 1 job is the same as the ratio of the time it takes X to complete 11 jobs to Y and Z completing 11 jobs)  The ratio of the time it takes printer X do the job to ratio it takes Y and Z working tether is 132/90 = 66/45  = 22/15.   The answer is D.
