Quant 2nd Edition – DS Questions 111-124

Question 111 – “In the sequence….”

OG Explanation is fine.

Question 112 – “For a certain…”

OG Explanation for statement 1 is way too long.

Statement 1: “If the n numbers in the set are listed in increasing order, then the difference between any pair of successive numbers in the set is 2.”    This is just saying that we have an evenly spaced set and the distance between each number is 2.   Evenly spaced sets have the same mean and median.   (You should know this:  More on Evenly Spaced Sets)   SUFFICIENT.

Statement 2: OG Explanation with counterexamples is decent here.   INSUFFICIENT.

The correct answer is A.

Question 113 – “If d is…..”

OG Explanation is fine.

Question 114 – “What is the area…”

OG Explanation is fine.   Note: this problem is very similar to problem 43.

Statement 1 of 43:  d = 5

Statement 2 of 43:  2( L + W ) = 14   or L + W = 7

Statement 1 of 114:   L + W = 6

Statement 2 of 114:  d = square root of 20.

You may want to refer to  my explanation for 43.

Question 115 – “Is the positive….”

OG Explanation is fine.   Another way you could do this is to break up the numbers in primes.

Is the positive integer n divisible by 24?        Is the positive integer n divisible by 233?

Statement 1

n is divisible by  4   is equivalent to n is divisible by 22 .   INSUFFICIENT

Statement 2

n is divisible by 6 is equivalent to n is divisible by 2(3).   INSUFFICIENT

Combining Statements 1 and 2:

n is divisible by 22(3).   This means n must be divisible by 12.   However, we don’t know if it is divisible by 24 so both statements are INSUFFICIENT.

The answer is E.

Question 116 – “If 75 percent of…”

Question 117 – “A tank….”

OG Explanation is fine.

Question 118 – “If x is…”

OG Explanation is fine.

Question 119 – “In the fraction…”

OG Explanation is fine.

Question 120 – “Is 1/(a-b)….”

OG Explanation is fine.

Question 121 – “If x and y…”

OG Explanation is fine.

Question 122 – “If 2 different representatives….”

Question 123 – “In triangle ABC….”

OG Explanation is okay but statements like “the degree measure of an exterior angle of a triangle is equal to the sum of the remote triangles” are too cumbersome to digest.   Drawing a diagram (like this one) is easier.

Question 124 – “If rs…”

OG Explanation is fine.
